After just 3 uses, the housing cracked on my machine. I called the company and told them of the situation. They told me to ship it to them. I came to find that the warranty does not cover cracked parts. I now have a $200 juicer that can not be used with a worthless warranty.

Each and everyday we make "fruit shakes" for our family of 5. Our mix consists of frozen fruit, sometimes some fresh fruit, yogurt, and oj. Our other blenders burned out, even the Blendtec couldn't handle the job (it automatically shut down on us, plus it couldn't really handle 64 oz. of our mix!). But this guy (okay, it's very masculine looking), can do the job quick and make enough in the mega-sized 64 oz. plus pitcher for all 5 of us (we usually have to make 2 pitchers). Frozen drinks are just about all we use a blender for so for our purposes, this is the only one for us! It's loud, it's scary, it moves about a bit, but it does the job so fast that it doesn't matter that much. It's not that attractive to my eyes, but my DH thinks otherwise. I usually like to store my appliances in cabinets, but this one is too big and heavy to move in and out each day...so on the counter it stays (it's sure to be a conversation piece). I have to say that it makes my life A LOT easier and that is why I rate it a 5.

Best Citrus Juicer Review

(More customer reviews)I ordered the RA Chand citrus juicer in late January 2009 for home use. Despite being advertised as having been designed for commercial use, it lasted less than four months under light (less than once a day) home use. During this period, I never squeezed anything harder than a juice orange. And in early May 2009 the handle/lever simply cracked in two. It was gone after less than four months and close to $200 expended (with shipping/tax). Whatever metal was used to fabricate the lever/handle, it was a shoddy composite because it cracked just like a piece of brittle plastic.
At the time I ordered this product, I was under the misunderstanding that it was made in the USA. While this was my error, I had had similar problems with Chinese made home grade juicers which I had bought for a quarter the price. (They, ironically, had each lasted six to eighteen months under similar usage before breaking.) The RA Chand juicer is made in Mexico, not the USA, and the quality that I experienced unfortunately lived up to my worst expectations.
If you want a juicer that looks sharp and don't expect to ever use it more than once a month, this product might be just right for you. But stay away if you want something you can actually use on a daily basis at home, much less in a commercial setting. This product is bad news.

I have a larger Cuisinart that sits on the shelf for months at a time and a 2 cup Black and Decker mini processor, which is just way too small, but I used it for years anyway. I had seen this model on a lot of TV cooking shows, but had no idea what size or brand it was. Now I am recognizing my model in use almost everyday.
I recently came across this 4 cup Cuisinart, quite by accident, and I absolutely love it. I have used it more in the last few weeks that I used the 2 cup in 6 months. It makes excellent bread crumbs, fresh and dried, and just the right amount of salsa or tapenade in seconds. Yes, it does pulverize onions, but I watch it very closely and since they are an ingredient, not served by themselves, they work out fine.
Four cups is a good size and it has a lot of power. It's easy to use and clean.
*** In response to the review where the motor died after only a few uses ... this happened to me the third or fourth time that I used it - it just stopped working. Fortunately my husband was standing there and while I was having a fit, he simply pushed the long plastic thing into the base to make the connection. I hadn't pushed it in all the way. No problem after that and I now make sure it is inserted properly.

(More customer reviews)I bought this because we had just moved to citrus country (Fillmore, CA), and had lots and lots of free oranges, lemons and grapefruit to juice. I though it looked kind of cool, however when it arrived my wife informed me it was ugly. Oh well, I thought, we'll keep it out of sight but it should crank through the fruit! NOT!
Within the first couple of weeks one of the welds broke and I had to send it back into the manufacturer. They replaced the part (a spout), but it's clear that the design is weak at this point and likely to break again. The reamer empties into a steel cup with two small tubes, to which the "penguin arms" attach. The act of attaching and removing the arms stresses the weld point where the tubes meet the cups. Additionally, the tubes are about the exact size of an orange seed, so it's common for them to clog up. Finally, it seems to overheat and quit for a few minutes after only a half-dozen fruit, then it has to sit for a while before we can use it again.
Bummer.

(More customer reviews)Firstly, I have had no mechanical issues with my juicer and use it about every day. I use beets, carrots, apples, oranges and all get turned into delicious juice! I almost never have to use the high setting and find the motor to be very powerful and find it very easy to clean, dis-assemble. The only minor gripe would be that the pulp can sometimes collect at the top of the resevoir. I like that it feels very stable, is very solid and has suction cups to hold it in place. It is very powerful, makes great juice and I'm all the healthier for it!

Despite being aluminum and not steel I will keep the juicer. It juices wheatgrass well and is easy to clean. I just don't like being tricked by false advertising.

Emergency Fire Starter Review

I tried this magnesium fire starting tool - SE(Emergency Fire Starter - SE - Emergency Fire Starter) out as well as the alternative from (from Doan Machinery & Equipment - "Genuine Issue Magnesium Survival Fire Starter" Genuine Issue Magnesium Survival Fire Starter).
Both tools work perfectly fine as described and were able to light up fine fibers(cotton, moss, dried grass) and paper without a problem. The Doan tool has more precise instructions and clearly states on the packaging to scrape the magnesium portion of the bar with a knife blade PERPENDICULAR to the edge of the tool. I found this to method made for the most shavings and larger shavings at that. The packaging clearly states that you want a QUARTER(U.S. Coin) sized amount (just shy of 1 inch or 2.4cm diameter) Then holding the bar at 45 degree angle to the pile of shavings drag the knife along the flint to create sparks. The directions remind you to hold the blade perpendicular to the bar while "striking" the flint. I would advise not to strike the flint as they are brittle. However, a nice quick full length drag of the blade down the flint creates a shower of sparks for easy ignition of the magnesium shavings.
Both brands work fine. They are nearly identical in shape(the SE is a few mm longer). Each brand has a different finish/coating on the bar itself is about the only difference I can tell. The performance seemed to be identical or at least close enough to not notice anything to complain about. The big difference is the price. The SE(made in China) is about half the price of the Doan(Made in USA - Patented). It appears to me that they are both the same design with slightly different execution of it, and one is just made overseas so that is why it's cheaper(unless there is less active "ingredients"(magnesium).
One other note: The SE(Chinese one) also comes with a saw blade striker that does work but you need to wear through a protective layer of lacquer for it to work and it's just small enough to annoy my large hands. I just stick with a cheap staineless steel pocket knife for this. I always carry about 3-4 blades when I'm out hiking(cheap folder that I don't care if it gets ruined, sometimes a higher quality folder, always a fixed blade that is larger with full tang, and usually a multi tool(leatherman).
You can't go wrong with either tool. I'd prefer to buy American(Doan - the "other" one) in the long run though, especially for something I might end up having my life depend on.
EDIT: One last note on product life- depending on how much magnesium you need to get your fire going each time, I think the flint will run out long before you ever use up all the magnesium.

There have been a ton of reviews mentioning that the DOAN tool being purchased is no longer made in USA or shipped as a knock off. Be careful which seller you buy from. I will be posting pictures later today that show the SE Tool side by side with the Doan tool. I no longer have the packaging to show what they look like however.

(More customer reviews)I have been looking for a blender for a few weeks now. We have started making smoothies at home and burned up our old one. Our girls like the "Chocolate Elvis" recipe from the local smoothie place which contains peanutbutter, bananas, yogurt, ice, and milk. I guess this is really hard on blenders. I bought one at Target 2 weeks ago that had "700 watts peak power" on the box. It died in 2 days. The power spec on the bottom of the blender said 450 watts. I think that is false advertisement. I have seen this on 2 different blenders now.
I have been leery of buying any blender with the little plastic teeth couplers because of all the bad reviews here on Amazon. I also wanted to stay away from anything with only 450 watts.
I was in another store and saw this blender. It has a new design for where the blades couple with the motor. "Commercial quality couplers with 12 interlocking teeth....coated for quiet operation".
We have had it for a few days now and have made some pretty thick smoothies. So far, so good. No burning smell like the one that was immediately apparent with the Target blender. My youngest daughter complanied that her smoothie was "too smooth". I guess she got used to the chunks of ice that our past blenders have left.
Kitchenaid doesn't seem to advertise the actual power specs on their blenders. On the bottom of this one it says that it draws 6 amps. Which is about 720 watts or about 0.9 horsepower.
My only complaint so far is the soft start feature. The blade starts at a slower speed then quickly increases to the speed you chose. This process still throws everything up into the lid, which is what it should prevent. It works fine though as long as you have the lid on. It also works if you start with the slowest speed and work your way up.
Overall this blender seems to be well made and pretty well thought out. The cord storage on the bottom is a great feature. It has much bigger feet than the previous model. So far, I would highly recommend this blender for the person looking for a good blender in the under $200 range.

It is a year and about 300 smoothies later and we still have this blender. I would highly recommend it!!
