(More customer reviews)This press is great! Highly recommended. It has a lot of power so the juicing cone continues to spin even with a lot of pressure. You have option to use the lever to press or your hand. ALL the juice was extracted from my fruit. I'm not a pulp lover and I was thrilled when most of the pulp was left in the bowl. But for my Mom who is a pulp lover, it was easy to scoop out the pulp for her glass of juice. Besides that, it was very easy to assemble (remember the pin on the back of the handle) and it was easy to clean too. All the removable pieces are dishwasher safe. It's also smaller than a juice extractor ... so it doesn't take up a lot of counterspace and I can store it in the cabinet too.

(More customer reviews)I bought these along with the Back to Basics SIT10823 Ice Treats Electric Ice Shaver and these cups are pretty pliable which means that you have to develop a way to hold them without making the ice squeeze out of them before putting them in the holder. I is still a good cup and I wished that for the price you can get 4 instead of 2 cups. I don't put these in the dishwasher but just wash them by hand after use.

Presto 07030 Cool Touch 20-Inch Electric Griddle, Black Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this griddle for yakiniku, which is a great way to entertain guests, but I have found that I have been using it far more than anticipated.
Pros:
It's awesome to have a griddle in the kitchen. First and foremost, it's great being able to make more than one or two pancakes at a time. If you want to serve someone up a short stack, there is a lot of waiting using only two pans, but with this, you can crank out three good size cakes at the same time. Also, frying eggs and warming meat at the same time has saved me a lot of time in the mornings.
It's easy to clean. If you read the manual carefully, it suggests seasoning before use. This ensures a light coat of oil stays on it while it's being used. I've done this and NOTHING has stuck to the surface. I also give it a thorough scrub with either a dry paper towel or a wet one held with chopsticks after each use and it stays very clean.
It gets hot fast! Way faster than my range top and a pan, which also saves me time in the morning. This is mostly due to the light construction, but this can also contribute to un-even heating, which I have not yet had a problem with, although others have.
Its just more fun. Maybe this is helping me live out some long-lost short-order cook fantasies? = )
Cons:
As other reviewers have noted, it slides around a bit. I find myself lifting it up a bit on one side to both keep it in place and also to give the spatula better odds of sliding under an egg without breaking it. This is not a deal-breaking compensation, but rubber feet would have been nice here.
It tends to get pretty hot. The manual comes with cooking temps, but I found most of them to be a little high. Cooking a little more cool has helped things out for me. Again, this may be what has attributed to others' problems.
The bottom line here is that you get what you pay for. This is one of the cheaper models on the market, so I think it would be a little unrealistic to assume that the bargain model would deliver a top-of-the-line performance. I have had zero problems with mine so far, but I recognize that it clearly has some room for improvements. Until I want to shell out more than $30 for a small kitchen appliance, I'll be quite happy with this product.

Velox Tomato Press / Tomato Strainer - Made in Italy Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this tomato press to replace a similar one I got years ago which finally just wore out. Be aware that the actual color of the press is RED not the white as in the photo. The square bowl that comes with this particular press is handy for catching the offloaded tomato remnants. A comment about these type of presses making only "tomato soup" which is sort of true, the pressed tomato stuff that comes out of the chute is sort of soup-like but makes a great base for spaghetti sauce, salsa, and pizza sauce. I usually add a can of tomato paste to thicken the sauce up. Secondly I saw one reviewer's comments about the left over tomato stuff being a waste, well, I learned years ago to just keep putting that material back in the hopper and re-pressing it. I recently did about 10 pounds of tomatoes from my garden and got 4 huge containers of sauce with only seeds, a stem or three, and bits of skin left over. My wife was amazed at how little is left after you keep re-pressing.
The only down side to these presses is the squisher part which is inside is tough to clean. All in all though a great way to make a sauce base for the money and a great use of my garden tomatoes.

(More customer reviews)I am brand new at canning, and did my first batch prior to ordering these tools. It went okay, but I was immediately sold on the idea of a jar lifter. I looked and looked locally but couldn't find one, and this set was available for immediate shipment.
The jar lifter is fantastic, and ultimately I think it alone is worth the price of admission -- not because it's worth it in and of itself, but because it's a total necessity, so I would have purchased it at any price that wouldn't break the bank.
The other pieces are either already part of a moderately well-equipped kitchen, are nice but not necessary, and/or are not all that well constructed.
I'd opted to return a relatively expensive set of plastic funnels when I purchased this set, but the included funnel here melted a bit under the heat of the boiling brine I poured over the pickles-to-be. Same for the plastic surrounding the magnet when I used it (quite effectively) to grab the jar lids out of a simmer sauce pan. The lid wrench I'm just not sure I see a use for, since jars aren't supposed to be super tight and they tend to loosen when cooled anyway (or am I misunderstanding what this is for?), and the tongs, well, who doesn't have tongs?
Anyway, in researching for this review, I've come to feel like something of an idiot, because the pieces are available separately and eligible for the free shipping promotion of your choice. Unless you don't already have a funnel, or don't mind the possibility of plastic in your canned food, I recommend saving five bucks and just getting these two pieces:

If you need more than those two pieces, though, this set will do the job.

Progressive International Collapsible Cupcake and Cake Carrier Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this a few weeks ago because I'm always making cupcakes and never have an easy way to bring them anywhere. Most cupcake holders hold 12 cupcakes or crush the frosting. The other problem is that most holders take up so much room when you need to store them that it's not worth having them in the first place. This holds 24 cupcakes and has enough headroom to prevent frosting mishaps. It also has an ingenious collapsible design to allow it to take up less than half its original height. I'll break down the positives and negatives:
POSITIVES:
- Collapsible, space-saving design
- Holds 12-24 cupcakes - you choose! Use one tray for 12, 2 trays for 24.
- Included cupcake trays are nice to look at, easy to clean, and have finger-holes to allow easier removal of individual cupcakes
- Cupcakes have enough headroom on both levels for mounds of frosting or decorations
- Use it with cake instead of cupcakes if you want by just removing the trays altogether.
NEGATIVES:
- The included cupcake trays don't interlock with the base in any way. They actually slide around quite a bit until you put the cover on. This creates a problem for loading and for unloading. If they had made a small groove that the tray could have sat in or a way to lock them in place without the cover, it would have increased the stability of the trays for loading and unloading. NOTE: They don't move when you put the lid on, only with the lid off!
- I doubt the handle is going to be strong enough for holding heavy cakes. I don't honestly expect to hold a cake caddy by the handle, though - some cakes can weigh a lot and I'm not going to trust a handle with my time-consuming precious baked masterpiece. I always carry from the bottom. Still, the handle has the very important job on this cake caddy of being able to expand the thing from collapsed to full.
- Requires a fair amount of strength to uncollapse.
- Kind of ugly. The red band is really not a nice color. I would have preferred it in white. It really goes with nothing - it's not Christmas red, it's more of a maroon, but even then, it's not REALLY maroon, either. It's just not pretty and it looks dated now, it's going to look even more dated in a few more years.
- Cupcakes could flip sideways/over if you're not careful. I had no mishaps bringing cupcakes where they needed to go because I was very careful, but bringing the cupcakes home I was less careful and some of the leftovers flipped on their sides.
Overall, I would definitely recommend this. The trays are made of high-quality plastic that doesn't stain (black food coloring sat on it for 7 days and came right off without even any soap). The locks feel secure. The space-saving design sets it apart from every other cake caddy on the market. And it can hold 24 cupcakes without much trouble. Even though it's ugly and the trays slide around initially, I think it's a pretty good product.

Presto 06852 16-Inch Electric Skillet with Glass Cover Review

(More customer reviews)The 16" size of this Presto skillet actually ended up saving room in my kitchen because it replaced both an electric griddle and an old 12" electric skillet. This pan can be used for all kinds of cooking: griddling, frying, grilling, braising, roasting, even baking. The sides are high enough to use it as a chicken fryer or for stirfry. I can check how bacon is frying through the glass lid, minimizing spatter, if any. The temperature control is accurate and the pan heats up quickly, unlike my electric stovetop. In fact, you can get a perfect simmer by turning the knob down just till the light goes out. Also nothing sticks to it. The only two things you have to remember are: 1)spray it with Pam or some other cooking spray the first time you use it (just the first time), and 2)to maintain the nonstick coating, never soak it in water for extended periods (you won't need to soak it, it cleans up fast and easy). I really like this skillet and recommend it highly. I bought it in February and have used it regularly ever since.
NOTE: It is now May 2008 and I still use this electric skillet at least once or twice a week. It has held up beautifully and still looks new. I have to tighten the leg screws now and then but I'm not complaining. I would give this pan six stars if I could.
NOTE: It is now October 2008 and we still use this skillet a couple of times per week at least. It takes about 3 minutes to clean after it cools. I can cook just about anything in it. I like its temperature accuracy and the quick control I have over the heat. I use it all the time.
NOTE: It's now February 2009, and two years since I bought this skillet. I still use it at least once a week and it is holding up just fine. Other than tightening the leg/handle screws now and then, it works as well as the day I received it.
NOTE: It's now January 2010 and the skillet is still going strong. No problems with it at all. We use it every weekend for egg & pancake breakfasts with all the trimmings.

Jamba Juice Smoothie Maker Review

(More customer reviews)This smoothie make is a piece of JUNK. Didnt work at all. When I realized the blender took batteries (!) I took 4 "C" batteries out of another toy and it didnt work...so I ran down the street to the quick mart to buy 4 brand new batteries, in case that was the problem Eight dollars later (ugh!) the blender blades barely spun, but didnt make any sort of smoothie. Kept getting stuck on FRUIT and didnt even smash the fruit. When it was done running there were still pieces of strawberry and banana that didnt even get crushed. My daughter cried and I felt horrible because "Santa" brought this. Thank God I only paid $12 for it. I ended up getting out the Magic Bullet to make our smoothies, and we used the ice pop part...well see how that goes. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY!

Progressive KT-1205 International Kitchen Scale Review

(More customer reviews)I am NOT into gadgets but this one is a must have! If you want a scale for measuring and aren't so concerned about sleek looks, this is the one.
The price is fantastic so you can afford to quit guessing at 10 oz. of basil and just weigh it. A lot of foreign recipe books call for weighed measures instead of cups of ingredients and this inexpensive little scale is more than adequate.
The bowl removes easily so I even use this for weighing smaller packages for shipping, with bowl removed.
The scale zeroes out where ever you set it. So if you want to use a larger bowl you can set it on the scale, zero out the scale, and then add your ingredients for an accurate measure.
I keep this in my baking drawer so it is easily accessible.
And I use it all the time!

Roma Food/Veg Strainer Review

(More customer reviews)I have used this Roma Vegetable Strainer for making apple sauce twice. Previously I have used the Victorio strainer (very nice and sturdy, but no longer available) and Back to Basics (stronger than the Roma in my opinion, but not as good as the Victorio - it had a lot of parts to lose and was not rust resistant). The Roma is easy to put together and seems to be rust resistant, but is weak, flimsy, unstable, and doesn't hold on my counter well with either the suction or the clamp.Things I like about the Roma Strainer:
* Pieces attach easily without nuts and bolts
* Seem to be rust resistant (The Back-to-Basics strainer that I bought 15 years ago had some parts that would rust)
* Plastic cone that takes the waste (seeds, core and skin) away is farther from the sauce dispenser, making it easier to have various shapes of bowls.Things I dislike about the Roma Strainer:
* The suction cup does not hold on my smooth quartz counter-top. Nice try, but it doesn't work.
* I have a bull-nose (rounded edge) to my counter-top so the clasp doesn't work very well either - it isn't long enough to reach around the bull-nose. So, it starts wiggling fairly quickly and isn't very stable, with no way to attach it more firmly.
* The handle is much harder to turn than the old Victorio (purchased 30 years ago) or Back-to-basics (purchased 16 years ago) strainers I have previously used. As I turn the handle, the vertical support seems to wobble or bend a bit, as though it isn't very strong.
* The handle seems a bit flimsy.
* Turning the handle is stiffer with more resistance than with the other strainers I have used before. (You tire more quickly.
* I have to run the waste product through 2 x as there is a lot of good applesauce that goes out with it.
The materials and workmanship are poorer quality. Some of the features (fewer parts to get lost) are nicer. Overall, though, my experience is that it is not nearly as good or as easy to use as the other strainers I have used in the past.

Remanufactured Breville XXBBL600XL IKON Hemisphere Blender Review

(More customer reviews)This is my second Breville blender. The first lasted about a year and a half which is probably OK considering that we use it at least once a day every day. I liked it because it was powerful, fairly quiet, and nicely designed. There were a couple of little problems but Customer Support took care of those.
The second blender, which I bought this summer, started to leak between the glass jar and the metal cuff about six weeks after I bought it. I called Customer Support and the man I talked to wanted to charge me $40 for a new jar. I said that this was clearly a manufacturing defect so he said, "Meet us halfway. Send us pictures of the jar." So I e-mailed pictures of the jar with the problem area marked in red. Nothing happened. I called back and got a woman this time. She acted as though my pictures had been received but said they had to be evaluated and that she would call me the next day. No call. I called a third time, got a man who I'm pretty sure was the same one I'd talked to before, though he seemed not to have heard of any of this. He said that my pictures had not arrived and told me to re-send them, which I did. I also sent copies to myself, which got through just fine. Nothing happened.
This is a nice blender but basically you're buying it without a warranty. Fortunately we saved the jar from the first blender so we don't have to lay out $40 in order to use it.

(More customer reviews)Sometimes you just can't win. I've seen the other reviews whining that the included strainer isn't fine enough to catch all debris in leftover frying oil. Well, if Norpro had made the strainer finer, I'm certain we'd see people complaining that the strainer was too fine! This is a well-made funnel; I've had mine for years. Unlike plastic funnels, which never really feel clean after dealing with grease and oil, this one cruises through the dishwasher w/o problems. I have used the strainer for oil, but it is on the coarse side. However, I find this funnel works great with a Melitta #2 coffee filter, which I use for my small coffeemaker. I don't like using cheesecloth as it's a hassle. I'd suggest going to a coffee filter as an alternative. Additionally, I can pour hot oil after frying at a temp that would damage a plastic funnel.
